COVID-19 Club News

Return to Curl Protocols 2021

As communicated on 6th September 2021, members are now required to provide proof of vaccination. Vaccine passports will be accepted once they are released for use by the province, but for the moment, please email your proof of vaccine document to Denise Hoekstra (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.). Please be reassured that once Denise has received your notification, your email and attached document will be permanently deleted. No personal information of this kind will be retained by the club. Alternatively, you can bring your proof with you in person to show to Denise.

As per last season, signed waivers and declaration of compliance documents will be required prior to your first game. These documents are available to be downloaded from the Granite website (https://ottawagranite.com/index.php/covid-19/covid-19-waivers). You can either sign and return digital copies to Denise via email (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) or return signed paper copies to Denise at the club.

The contact tracing app will be available again this year in order to sign in each time you visit the club. If you are returning for the first time since the pandemic started, and have registered you will receive a QR code by email. This can be uploaded to your phone for you to scan on the iPad located in the pre-game zone. If you do not have a phone, a QR code can be printed for you to scan. Alternatively, a sign in sheet will always be available at the entrance door.

On your return, masks must be worn in all areas of the club except for in the ice shed or when seated and eating or drinking. It is important to note that if you choose not to wear your mask while curling, you must only remove your mask when in the ice shed and replace your mask before re-entering the pre-game zone.

This season, the building capacity allows for four sheets to be scheduled for use. However, games will still be staggered in order to maximize distancing of members entering the ice shed. Game times will be 90 minutes long, and you will be required to arrive no earlier than 15 minutes before your game is to start. Locker rooms will not be in use, so you are asked to arrive ready to play. The adjusted rules of play remain in place as per last season. Please refer to the Return to Curl Protocols document, which is attached and can be found on the Granite website (https://ottawagranite.com/index.php/covid-19/covid-19-links-and-information) All washrooms will be fully available, and members are asked please to sanitize any areas within the washroom that you use.

The bar will be open for post-game socializing, and unlike last season, the bar will be staying open after the late evening games. You will see that the round tables will be in use for four people per table. While the tables will be spaced apart by 6’, you will not be distanced 6’ away from those who you are sitting with. Please make sure that you are comfortable to socialize with others closer than the recommended physical distance. If you are staying to socialize after your game, you are asked to ensure that you leave the club before the next draw makes their way to the bar area.

We have all been experiencing that this situation is fluid and can change. As the situation either improves or worsens, the protocols can be eased or made more restrictive. The refund deadline of 1st November 2021 remains in place, so the Return to Curl Committee will be meeting prior to that date to reassess the club’s protocols.

Return to Curl Committee

Spring 2021

Registration for the coming season is now open. However, the Club will continue to operate under the
recommendations of the Province and CurlOn when we re-open in September. We will update this
space as new information and protocols are released.

October 12, 2020 - Club Closed

The Board of Directors, acting on the modified Stage 2 orders set out by the Premier of Ontario, is advising members that the Granite club facilities will be closed for a period of 28 days effective Oct 10, 2020. The advisory has stated that no games are to take place and all food and drink service is prohibited. Although this does not restrict training, the Board, for significant logistical and financial reasons, has taken the decision to close the club to all curling activities.

Our reopening in September went very well, but we are now caught in the second wave and must all do our part to help flatten the curve again. The Covid 19 sub-committee will be meeting frequently to monitor the situation and advise the Board as to when the club will be able to reopen once restrictions are lifted. We commend the members who have participated in curling activities to date, and our staff who have worked to keep the club environment as safe as possible.

Further email updates will follow to keep our members up to date on the situation.

Thank you for your continued support. Stay safe.

Granite Board of Directors

Yesterday the Board of Directors passed the following Motion: The Board mandates that all members wear masks or protective face coverings while in the ice shed, as well as when entering and exiting the building and waiting in the lounge area.

While many of the Granite Leagues began curling last week and reported no problems, concerns were expressed by some members about the Granite’s perceived lack of response to the latest rise in the number of COVID-19 cases in Ottawa and the advice of Government of Ontario health authorities to reduce contacts and practice physical distancing.

No directives have come down from any of the Government of Ontario, Ottawa Public Health or from Curling Canada/CurlON to change the policies and protocols under which we are operating. However, in light of the recent increase in COVID-19 cases and the advice of health authorities, the Board has now mandated that all members wear masks or protective face coverings while in the ice shed, as well as when entering and exiting the building and waiting in the lounge area.

During the Board review of this matter it was noted that players may wish to change masks while a game is in progress due to moisture build up. Please do so in a careful manner and retain any mask that is removed for cleaning or disposal outside the club premises.

Thank you for your attention to this directive and for showing consideration to those you are curling with during this season.

Club Information

Founded in 1953, the Granite Curling Club of West Ottawa was formed to be the first club in the area to curl exclusively with granite rocks.

We have grown from modest beginnings with 176 members to a club that serves over 650 members and operates 7 days a week.  We offer a wide variety of adult leagues as well as "learn to curl" programs for adults and kids.

We embrace all levels of curling from beginners to competitive and we hope to see you on the ice soon.
