COVID-19 Club Regulations

The COVID Sub-Committee has prepared the Return to Curling Plan (updated October 19 2020) (click here) with guidance from the Provincial government, Ottawa Public Health, CurlON and Curl Canada. You will notice as you read the plan that our curling experience when we return will be very different from normal. Every part has been adapted to ensure that all members are interacting and curling in as safe an environment as possible.

As we know, the situation is fluid and, while we hope that restrictions will gradually be lifted as the season progresses, we must be prepared for the restrictions to be increased or even to close the club for the remainder of the season should there be another outbreak in our community. We all assume a level of risk by curling together, however, if we take responsibility to wear masks, physically distance, and conduct frequent health self-checks, these risks can be mitigated as much as possible. There is a risk assessment and waiver document that will be sent to all members before the season starts. This must be signed and returned. It will only be required once, but must be submitted before your first game. The document can be electronically signed and emailed to Denise, or a paper copy can be signed and brought with you on returning to the club.

Ottawa is now in stage three of Ontario’s re-opening plan. Therefore, a maximum of fifty people will be allowed in the building at any one time, meaning that only three sheets will be used during game play. On our return, we will be curling recreationally instead of competitively. Our games will be for pleasure and self-improvement only. Game start times will be staggered to aid in physical distancing, there will be specific arrival times prior to game start times as well as strict finish times. Due to the capacity restriction, only members who are scheduled to play may be in attendance at the club. There will be no spectators allowed and no booking of practice ice at this time.

It will be mandatory for masks to be worn in the club except for when playing on the ice or consuming beverages. Maintaining 2m (6 feet) physical distance is required where possible, and there will be markers on floors where necessary to help guide this. The club will be divided into zones based on the activity. We ask that all members review a list of self-check health questions before each visit to the club.

There will be frequent cleaning and sanitizing in high traffic areas. However, as members of the club, we will all need to do our part in maintaining a sanitized environment. The washrooms will be open to allow for two physically distanced users at one time, and we ask that all who use the washrooms sanitize surfaces before and after use. If there is a COVID case reported within the club, we will close for a minimum of three days to clean the facilities, and contact tracing will be undertaken to identify those who may have been exposed to the virus.

Club Information

Founded in 1953, the Granite Curling Club of West Ottawa was formed to be the first club in the area to curl exclusively with granite rocks.

We have grown from modest beginnings with 176 members to a club that serves over 650 members and operates 7 days a week.  We offer a wide variety of adult leagues as well as "learn to curl" programs for adults and kids.

We embrace all levels of curling from beginners to competitive and we hope to see you on the ice soon.
