Manager appointed
Friday, 01 August 2008
I am very pleased to announce that Denise Hoekstra has accepted the position of Manager of the Club, effective August 11, 2008.  Denise brings considerable experience within organized curling at the provincial level.  Denise's enthusiasm for the game, considered execution of organizational endeavours, approachable demeanor, and creativity bode well for the coming year at the Granite.  I encourage all Members of the Club and those of you in the curling community in Ottawa who deal with our Club to call or stop in to meet Denise.  I know that Denise is looking forward to working with all of you.

Denise has been a member of the Granite Curling Club since 2001.  Prior to moving to Ottawa, Denise was a member of the Fort Garry Curling Club in Winnipeg, Manitoba as well as a member of the Carman Curling Club.

In 1995, Denise was asked to join the Executive Council of the Manitoba Ladies Curling Association (MLCA). During her time on Council, she served as Chairman of various committees including Senior Women's Bonspiel, Yearbook, and Publicity.

In 1998, she was asked to join the Management Group and then served as Provincial Senior Women's Chairman and Provincial Junior Women's Chairman.

Denise played an integral part in the amalgamation process of the former Manitoba Curling Association (MCA) and the MLCA and became the Managing Director of the new MCA. Her final service to the new MCA was in the capacity of Provincial Chairman of the Scott Tournament of Hearts held in Thompson, Manitoba in January of 2001.

In 2003, Denise was selected to have her name added to the list of Honourary Life Members of the Manitoba Curling Association.

Upon arriving in Ottawa, Denise spent her first curling season in the company of the Ottawa Deaf Curling Club.  In 2002, she joined Team Schmidt and has been a member of this foursome ever since, truly being able to call the Granite her home club.

Denise has spent the last few years as a Junior Women's coach with Team Gardner. She has taken special interest in the development of curling skills amongst our Deaf participants. Denise was named the men's coach for Team Canada who participated in the 2007 Deaflympics in Salt Lake City, Utah, where they won the gold medal for Canada.  She continues to volunteer her skills as a teacher during the fall clinics held at the Navan Curling Club and, of course, at the Granite.  Her interests have moved to the development of our youngest players, and to that end she currently volunteers with the Granite Little Rocks program on Saturday mornings.

President, Granite Curling Club of West Ottawa
